The COVID-19 pandemic has changed people’s lives and relationships in unprecedented ways. Though it is widely recognised that one major impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has been a reduction in the way Australians socialise, it seems for some groups the pandemic may have improved their wellbeing and brought households closer. Surprisingly, the experience of prolonged hardship experienced by young adults and families over the past few years, in particular, has not consistently adversely affected their overall life satisfaction and quality of household relationships.

New research from Roy Morgan shows over 7 million Australians aged 14+ (33.4%) now use a meal delivery services in an average three months, up from 3.6 million (16.9%) in early 2020. Uber Eats is again the clear market leader used by 3.5 million Australians, up from 2.3 million in early 2020.

In July unemployment increased 0.7% points to 8.5%, according to the latest Roy Morgan employment series data. The rise in unemployment was due to the increasing size of the workforce with full-time employment, part-time employment and unemployment all increasing in July. This is the first month this year all three indicators have increased in the same month.

ANZ-Roy Morgan Consumer Confidence was down 3.8pts to 80.3 this week and is now a large 18.3pts below the same week a year ago, August 7/8, 2021 (98.6). In addition, Consumer Confidence is now 11.6pts below the 2022 weekly average of 91.9 and is now at its lowest for over two years since early April 2020 during the early stages of the pandemic.
